I don’t know if you screensaver nuts out there already know about this, but HAL still lives thanks to The HAL Project. I just rediscovered their website and I’m glad they are still updating their stuff for the Mac.

A warning upfront… we’re dealing with a Flash website. So, you young folks with your iOSses have to turn on “a real browser”… that’s what you call it, right? Anyway, in this rare case I’m okay with Adobe’s finest since we’re dealing with nerdy project dedicated to Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: a space odyssey” from 1968. I can imagine that the website took quite a while till it was what it is today.

The HAL Project started in 2006 and aims at bringing you a “graphic recreation” of the beloved evil psychopathic computer itself.

It’s not all ‘one red eye beaming you’ style… it’s a sophisticated, informative HAL, just like his creators imagined him to be like. Well, kids these days. What can you do?

Here’s a preview of what you get:

And, since it’s a shame that I haven’t posted this earlier here’s an icon set with the same theme. Can you guess what used for two whole years as my HD icon? I’m sure.

In case your in the mood now, Dribbble got you covered with a HAL wallpaper or a PSD file to put it anywhere. Alternatively, if you sway more in the analogue direction when it comes to retro movies. Here you can get crafty and print out a HAL (or was it this one).

More paper craft, wallpapers and fan art is to be found on Pinterest.

PS: Some people get even more craftier. Plush HAL 9000:

I wish you a nice day with a vintage vibe. Be kind to your Mac, don’t whisper secrets to your spouse or things can turn pear shaped pretty fast. Remember:

“It can only be attributable to human error. This sort of thing has cropped up before, and it has always been due to human error.”

HAL 9000, “2001: A Space Odyssey”

Cheers, your PAL.
